FAQ

What and How

Picmaly is a place that helps you take better photos. It does so by a photography skill improvement process that uses continuous, bi-directional, interactive feedback.
First you upload a photo from your computer. Then you give feedback to other user's photos (this will help you see other people's strengths and weaknesses) and will receive feedback on the photo you posted (to understand what you're doing right, and where you need to improve). Finally you will see the improvement of your skills and on your photos. It guides you through the whole process, and it's really easy and fun!
Yes. Picmaly is designed for everyone, from Photo Newbies (someone that never took one single photo before) to Photography Pros (National Geographic Photographers - you are welcome!).
Picmaly name is rooted in the Pygmalion Effect, which is the phenomenon whereby the greater the expectation placed upon people, the better they perform. Pygmalion + Picture - some letters = Picmaly!
pic.ma.ly /ˈpikməlē/. Or you can see it in our video.
Funny you should ask. Picmaly's slogan is: "Become a better photographer"

How does it work

Short answer: It depends.
Longer answer: It depends on how many users are in Picmaly when you post your photo. Also, the more other people tag your feedback as "Helpful", the grater the chances for you to receive your feedback. You can get three feedbacks as fast as 20 minutes.
You will improve by three different mechanisms:
  1. By receiving feedback on your photos, you will get real-life feedback from other users. This will help you understand what are your strengths (what you should keep doing), and what are your weaknesses (areas for improvement).
  2. By giving feedback to other user's photos, you will understand what are common mistakes that other people make so you can avoid them, and what are some strengths that you can adopt on your own photography. It's scientifically proven that you learn better and faster when the feedback goes both ways, and this is especially true in art forms like photography.
  3. By receiving tailored and personalized tips and articles, which will give you some different perspectives and photography tenets, which will help you improve in the areas that you need the most.
Absolutely. We are very scientifically minded here at Picmaly, and we based our system in state of the art Pedagogy researches, new learning philosophies and new web paradigms. Our goal is to help our users learn without going through a painful process, in a fast and fun way.
They are logical and standard categories that applies to Photography in general. We have them to help guide how we suggest photography content and feedback to you.

The categories are:
  • Composition / Framing
    • Is there a sense of balance and organization?
    • Is there any distraction on the background?
    • Does the photo tell a story?
    • Where is your eye taken to in the photograph?
    • Is it creating the visual impact it should?
  • Light / Color
    • Is the photo correctly exposed?
    • Are the colors harmonious?
    • Any issues with contrast or saturation?
    • If Black and White, how are the contrast and tones?
    • Issues with technique (focus, noise, post processing, etc.)?
  • Creativity
    • Is the photo unexpected?
    • Do you wish you’ve thought of the shot before?
    • Is the photo interesting and fresh?
    • Does the photo combine visual elements in intriguing ways?
Marking feedbacks you received as 'Helpful' / 'Not Helpful' is one of the ways you tell the system and the person who wrote the feedback that it actually helped you. Don't just mark negative feedbacks as 'Not Helpful' if you don't like it - think if it's something you can learn from. But by all means, mark useless feedback as 'Not Helpful', it will help those users gets better too!
I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you. (More than one thousand, less than seven billion).

Feedback, system fairness, and unhelpful feedback

We have logic built into Picmaly to help our users give better feedback as they use the system. They basically learn how to give feedback as time goes by. The system is not fair 100% of the time, but we try to guarantee that you are receiving feedback from people on the same level as you.
Think like it's Karma - it will balance out in the long run. You might receive additional feedbacks as time goes by, maybe after you forgot about it. If you feel it is totally unfair, shoot us an e-mail and we will see if there is something funky in the system.
See "How does the system keeps the feedback fair?" above.
We're here to listen, contact us via e-mail.

Based on our research on learning and how people improve their skills, we identifies this as the best way to structure the system in order to maximize learning efficiency. Also, it's only fair to give before receiving.
